| Pro-Abortion Agenda Bolstered by Teachers' Union Dues By Jim Brown (AgapePress) - A union watchdog group says the National Education Association and other teachers' unions have used the Roe v. Wade decision as an excuse to promote a radical pro-abortion agenda -- and are unashamedly using their members' dues to support the defeat of judicial nominees. During the last election cycle, labor unions spent tens of millions of dollars in workers' dues to support pro-abortion politicians. Dan Cronin, director of legal information for the National Right to Work Foundation, says America's two largest teachers' unions are the worst offenders when it comes to drafting "reproductive rights" resolutions and funding pro-abortion groups. "The American Federation of Teachers, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, and the NEA are all involved in what's called the 'Pro-Choice Public Education Project' -- getting the word out and trying to shove out their pro-abortion propaganda," Cronin says. He notes that one of the leaders of the project is Gloria T. Johnson, who is on the executive committee of the AFL-CIO. Other groups represented on the project's steering committee include the Feminist Majority Foundation, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, and two major pro-abortion groups: Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America. Cronin says it is the height of arrogance for the NEA and the AFT to use workers' dues to finance pro-abortion causes, when many of their members oppose the murder of unborn children. According to Cronin, teachers' unions also do everything in their power to block strict constructionist judges from the federal judiciary, while strongly supporting pro-abortion justices. "And the main point here is they're using dues that were confiscated from workers -- who had to pay these dues in order to get or keep a job as a condition of employment -- to support a radical social agenda that a lot of their members don't agree with," he says. Cronin says this shakedown continues, despite the fact that 40% of union members oppose abortion and believe in the sanctity of human life. © 2003 AgapePress all rights reserved.
