(AgapePress) - A conservative author and columnist says the hiring process at America’s public universities is ruthlessly controlled by the political left.

In a pamphlet titled "Political Bias in the Universities," David Horowitz details how conservatives, Christians, and others who oppose leftist indoctrination programs are prevented from being hired on our nation’s campus. Horowitz, founder of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, says he is trying to arouse the Republican Party to the seriousness of this problem.

"One of the reasons this happened is that conservatives just abdicated [and] didn't do anything with it," Horowitz says. "The left took over the schools and perverted their programs into left-wing propaganda programs -- and nothing was done. Conservatives are trustees on many of these universities, but they just haven't spoken up."

According to Horowitz, conservative students are being denied access to ideas that would support their own values. He says young college students have no conservative professors to speak of, and have reading lists that include no conservative books.

"Professors will ridicule [President Bush] routinely in the classroom, which is a violation of students' academic freedom, because the professor is in a position of authority -- and it's just an abuse of that authority," he says. "But I've found that conservative students tend to be very well behaved, and therefore it's hard to get them to protest their own abuse."

Horowitz hopes to counter the leftist educational environment by waging a campaign to restore sanity to college and university campuses. Toward that end, he has written a pamphlet for students called "You Can’t Get a Good Education If They’re Only Telling You Half the Story."
