FRC Head Dismisses Report on Homosexual Adoption as Unscientific, Biased
Study Funded by Pro-Homosexual Philanthropic Organization

By Jody Brown
October 30, 2003

(AgapePress) - A pro-family leader says a recent study on homosexual adoption -- funded by one of the largest pro-homosexual activist organizations in the U.S. -- is a "fraud." The study claims to show that most adoption agencies in the country now accept homosexuals as parents.

The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute in New York says that according to a nationwide survey it conducted of both public and private adoption agencies in the United States, 60% accept applications from homosexuals -- and 40% have already placed children with "gay or lesbian parents." The Institute says its findings show that "reality on the ground is outstripping the pace of the debate" on whether homosexuals should be allowed to marry or adopt.

Based on what it calls a "statistically strong 41% response rate," the Institute reports the following breakdown of agencies most willing to place children with homosexual adoptive parents: public (83.3%), Jewish-affiliated (72.7%), special needs (61.5%), secular private (55.9%), Lutheran-affiliated (53.3%), and international adoption (51.5%). The report from the Institute provides no clarification on the branches of Judaism or Lutheranism with which those agencies are affiliated.

Adam Pertman, executive director of the Donaldson Adoption Institute, is quoted in a press release as saying the most significant aspect of the research is that "it clearly shows how extensively attitudes in our country are evolving."

Tony Perkins
But Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, is blunt in his assessment of the survey that attempts to show that adoption agencies across the nation are embracing the idea of "gay adoption."

"This 'survey' is a fraud," Perkins says in a statement released by FRC. "It amounts to little more than propaganda being circulated by the gay community." He notes that on the first page of the findings, it is clearly stated that the study was funded by The Rainbow Endowment -- a pro-homosexual philanthropic organization that claims to have awarded $1.5 million in grants for various homosexual causes.

Perkins also takes issue with the Institute's assertion of a strong statistical response from adoption agencies. "With such a small size -- and with the knowledge that agencies who are receptive to homosexual adoption would be the most apt to respond to the survey -- it is impossible to declare that this study is based on scientific fact," he says.

The pro-family leader counters, pointing out that according to scientific studies, children raised in homosexual households are more likely to experiment with homosexuality, to be sexually promiscuous, and to have behavioral and other developmental problems. Knowingly placing children into homosexual households, he says, is "unconscionable."

"Children are not guinea pigs to be used in social experiments that aim to redefine the institutions of marriage and family," he says in reference to two of the major objectives of the homosexual agenda in America. "They are vulnerable individuals with vital emotional and developmental needs."

FRC has released a paper entitled "Homosexual Parenting: Placing Children at Risk," which is critical of studies claiming to show that children raised in homosexual households fare no worse than those reared in traditional families. According to the detailed paper, deficiencies of studies on homosexual parenting include reliance upon an inadequate sample size, lack of random sampling, lack of anonymity of research participants, and self-presentation bias.
