Opinions Differ on Same God, Different Names

(AgapePress) - Two high-profile evangelical Christians are squaring off over the issue of whether people of different religions can worship the same god.

E.V. Hill, a popular speaker at Promise Keepers events, has joined clerics from other world religions in calling for an interfaith day of prayer and fasting this Saturday. Based on a statement he made to Associated Press, it appears Hill holds to a popular belief today which teaches that Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and others can all pray to the same god.

"I think people of all religions are coming to the point of there is one god for which they have given different names to," Hill says, "but I don't believe there's but one God, and I think the crisis has pointed out that maybe that's truth, so we're all here together."

But other evangelicals like Tim LaHaye, co-author of the Left Behind series, strongly disagree with Hill's view. In the same AP report, LaHaye says all religions do not worship the same god.

"Christianity's not a religion where you can have a smorgasbord belief and still be saved," LaHaye says. "You have to accept the fact that Jesus is a central figure of all time and the only Son of God who died for the sins of man and rose again."

Bible-believing Christians also point to scriptures such as John 14:6, which teaches that the only way to God the Father is through Jesus Christ alone.
