| Falwell: ‘Comfortable’ Christians Sacrifice Spiritual Well-Being for Material Success By Allie Martin (AgapePress) - A pastor, university chancellor, and Christian activist says too many Christians have dropped out of the culture war because of society’s push for tolerance. Pastor Jerry Falwell says a Christian’s most important mandate is to tell others about Christ. He says second in line is to hold society up to Biblical standards. “We’re also, Jesus said, ‘the salt the earth.’ That is, we’re the conscience of the culture. And it is our duty not only to lift up Christ, but to cry out against unrighteousness,” Falwell says. “When we don’t do both, we don’t preach the whole counsel of God. Yes, it is divisive, but Jesus himself said ‘I didn’t come to bring together, I came to divide.’ When you declare yourself a Christian, you align yourself immediately with Him, and he was the most divisive personality in history.” Falwell says too many Christians in America are too comfortable, and are focused on achieving material success, often at the expense at of spiritual well-being. On a different note, Falwell believes it may soon be legal for religious organizations to raise soft money for political candidates. Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority, says the current political climate may force a change in the rules regarding soft money donations from religious groups. “The Democrats are the real culprits in soft money," he says. "When you consider the labor unions in America, against the wishes of many of their members, take the labor union dues and give them always to liberal causes and candidates. And the day may well come--unless they outlaw soft money, that’s the better way--but unless they outlaw soft money, we may just have to match them dollar for dollar in the churches,” Falwell says. Falwell made his comments during the recent Reclaiming America for Christ Conference held in Florida. © 2000 AgapePress all rights reserved.
