Stern's Television Act Yanked

By Chad Groening
November 26, 2001

(AgapePress) - A Michigan-based pro-family organization says it is a positive step that CBS recently announced it is canceling the Howard Stern television show -- but the notorious performer remains on cable and radio.

Bill Johnson is president of the American Decency Association. He continues to spearhead the effort to remove Howard Stern from the airwaves of America. And now after more than three years of work, he says CBS finally canned Stern's Saturday night program. Johnson believes the only reason the show remained on the air that long was that it was cheap to produce.

"It was something that they basically just videotaped ... as he was airing the radio show, and that was one of the reasons we believe why this TV show lasted even as long as it did," Johnson says. "It wasn't in a very attractive position time-wise on television, and it cost very, very little to produce it."

Johnson says it is unfortunate that Stern remains on the radio as well as the E! cable network. "Sadly that program does continue dirtying up America's airwaves as Stern continues on the E! channel," he says.

Johnson says another factor that contributed to the demise of the Stern television show was the strong letter-writing campaign which resulted in legitimate sponsors dropping their support. "The people that stood with us in writing letters did continue to drive off the legitimate kinds of [corporate sponsors]," he says.

In the end, he says, Stern's advertisers were places like tattoo shops, pornography outlets, the Playboy corporation, and "that sort of ilk."
