| School Ban Lifted on Candy Canes Bearing Christian Message By Jim Brown (AgapePress) - There has been a major free-speech victory for Christian high-school students in Nevada desiring to express their faith. For the past several years, a student group at Reno High School has handed out candy canes with a "Jesus Loves You" message attached. But this year, the administration intervened and told the students they could no longer pass out the candy because some find the message offensive. The Pacific Justice Institute subsequently filed a letter with the Washoe School District, encouraging it to have a change of heart on the matter. After receiving the letter, the district reversed its decision, making it clear they will no longer prevent the children from handing out the candy canes.
"It's a big victory for the kids [and] a victory for the Pacific Justice Institute -- and we hope it will help to lay a foundation for other school districts to follow," Dacus says. "That is, not to censor children's speech based upon their religious viewpoint. "We are pleased that this school district has decided to engage in what is known by some to be 'true tolerance' -- and that is not censoring kids simply because they don't like the religious beliefs of the children." Dacus says Christians should not have to accept such blatant suppression of student religious speech. © 2002 AgapePress all rights reserved.
