| Top Stories of 2001: Youth Warned of Pornographic Abercrombie & Fitch Catalogs Year in Review: Culture/Church By Rusty Pugh (AgapePress) - A major clothing retailer continues to use pornography in its catalog, and a pro-family activist says until action is taken, it will only get worse. Bill Johnson of the American Decency Association says the nudity and sex in the Abercrombie & Fitch Quarterly is getting worse. Johnson says the summer edition is the worst yet. He says A&F is pushing pornography to young people because they know that sex sells. "We all know that when you're at a hormonal stage of your life, like adolescents ... and teens are, many of them are desiring to be on the edge. Abercrombie and Fitch really desires to be very, very 'edgy' -- and by 'edgy' I mean ... really into the sexual area," Johnson says. "[Abercrombie and Fitch] know[s] that sex sells, they know that youth gravitate towards sexual things, and they've been able to push the envelope and get away with it by way of the types of sexualized catalogs that they have been pushing." Johnson says it is up to the Christian community to take action by boycotting the company. He says Abercrombie & Fitch will continue to use pornography until they feel financial pressure. "The only way that they're going to turn back around is if they start feeling some real pressure in their pocketbooks [and] they're losing profits," he says, "and I think the only way that's going to happen is if the Christian community really becomes the 'salt and light' of the world in relation to Abercrombie and Fitch." Johnson says Christian youth must also take a stand. He says they should realize that they are being targeted, and that they should disassociate themselves with something so blatantly pornographic. © 2001 AgapePress all rights reserved.
