Legislation Would Punish French For Lack of Support

(AgapePress) - A New Jersey Congressman has introduced legislation aimed at punishing the French for their deliberate opposition to U.S. efforts to disarm Saddam Hussein.

The bill, introduced by Republican Jim Saxton, would block any French company from participating or receiving U.S. government aid or financing in the reconstruction of a post-Hussein Iraq.

Saxton told Fox News Channel the French have deliberately gone out of their way to impede U.S. efforts in disarming Hussein and bringing about regime change in Iraq.

"The French, instead of saying, 'Well, we don't agree. We're not gonna help. We're gonna be passive in this situation'' went out of their way to form a coalition -- including Germany and of course, Russia -- against our united front," Saxton said. "That meant that it made it almost impossible for us to convince Saddam Hussein to disarm peacefully."

Saxton added, "I thought it was possible. I still think it could have happened, if it hadn't been for the French."

Saxton also wants the United States to boycott the 2003 Paris Air Show.

"[First,] we ought to boycott the Paris Air Show. It's a big air show [and] we provide 40% of the exhibitors," Saxton said.

"Second, I have a piece of legislation," Saxton says, "that says if the French decide not to participate in disarming Saddam, then when it comes time to rebuild Iraq, that their contractors are not welcome to participate through the use of U.S.-provided dollars."
