| It's 'Do or Die' for Virginia Governor on National Motto Postings By Rusty Pugh AgapePress) - It may be "The Alamo" for the national motto in the State of Virginia, as legislators attempt once more to get the phrase posted in classrooms and government buildings. Texans made a last stand at the Alamo. Now the same may be true for Virginia lawmakers who want "In God We Trust" posted in schools and local offices. They have restored legislation requiring the national motto be posted in those locations, this time without amendments added by Governor Mark Warner. Those amendments would have made the postings optional and would have required the state to pay any costs involved. Joe Glover of the Virginia-based Family Policy Network says Warner's amendment requiring the state to pay for the posters was a way for Warner to stop the measure while appearing to be for it.
"[Warner] talks out of both sides of his mouth -- on one side, he talks to pro-family people and says 'this is good ... if it's constitutional, I'll sign it.' On the other side he says 'I'm afraid schoolchildren are going to have to bring a dollar to school to pay for this'," Glover says. Warner now has 30 days to decide whether to sign the bill into law without amendments, or veto it -- killing it for the year. Glover, who describes Warner as "gutless" and "manipulative" in his handling of the issue, doubts the governor will decide to sign the bill. © 2002 AgapePress all rights reserved.
