Schools' Zero Tolerance Not Always Best, Schlafly Says By Jim BrownApril 28, 2003 (AgapePress) - A pro-family leader says many of the zero-tolerance policies being implemented in public schools across the U.S. are having a detrimental effect on young boys. Many schools began implementing the policies in the wake of Columbine and other dramatic incidents of terror and violence on school campuses. But Phyliss Schlafly, founder of the pro-family group Eagle Forum, says many usually well-behaved children are being expelled or suspended for no good reason. She maintains that children, and particularly boys, who are not allowed to let off steam on the school playground during recess are often unable to sit still in the classroom. And, Schlafly says, when boys become disorderly in the classroom, they are frequently given drugs like Ritalin -- as much as ten times more often than are girls. That is one reason why she believes schools need to reject the fad of eliminating recess.
Schlafly says she also believes feminist groups in this country are trying to make young boys behave like little girls. "They're so lacking in common sense that you almost believe they're serving another agenda, and I think it is part of the war on boys," she says. "Dr. [James] Dobson has written about the war on boys, and I feel very strongly that the feminists are against everything that's masculine. [It is] almost always boys who are the ones being punished." Schlafly adds that there is no reason why boys should not be allowed to wrestle on the playground or play cops and robbers, tag, dodge ball, and other games which involve some bodily contact. © 2003 AgapePress all rights reserved.
