| Australian Family Groups Hope Violent Rapper Denied Visa By Robin Burchfield (AgapePress) - Australian family groups are asking the government to block a rap artist from touring the country. In July, rap star Eminem is scheduled to perform at the Mount Fuji Festival in Japan. Afterwards, he is considering a tour of Australia. That is causing concern for family groups who say his graphic lyrics are harmful to young people. Eminem's real name is Marshal Bruce Mathers III. His music lyrics have featured graphic descriptions of killing his girlfriend and raping his mother. Also, Reuters News reports last month he pleaded no contest to two gun-related charges with sentencing scheduled for June 5. Australian Family Association national secretary Bill Meuhlenberg says the rapper's lyrics are not a great message to be sending young people, given the high rates of youth suicide and drug abuse. He says, "It compounds the problem." Meuhlenberg is urging the government to deny the singer a visa to tour the country. A spokesman for the Immigration Minister says so far, they have not received an entertainment visa from the singer -- but he noted Mathers would have to pass tough character checks before being allowed into the country. © 2001 AgapePress all rights reserved.
