Conservatism an Endangered Species on America's Campuses

(AgapePress) - A pro-family leader says America's colleges and universities are becoming increasingly hostile to conservative students.

Bob Knight is director of the Culture and Family Institute, an affiliate of Concerned Women for America. He says the very possibility of taking a conservative stance on many American campuses is commonly being written out of college syllabi.

"Campuses have become a hotbed of radicalism, and it's of the type that is very disturbing because it's not merely liberal, not merely left-wing -- it's totalitarian," Knight says. "It says 'we will enforce certain beliefs, and anyone who doesn't agree with us will be shoved off campus.' "

Knight says there remains an ongoing campaign against the conservative presence in public universities. He says the campaign ranges from administrative discouragement of conservative student groups, to social and academic pressures placed on those who dare to question tenured left-wing professors -- and even to increasing hostility to conservative commencement speakers.

"Very few conservatives are invited on campus to speak," he says, "and those that are often face stiff opposition. Some get un-invited later -- there are many instances of that where even members of presidential administrations have been hounded off campus."

A recent survey by the Young America's Foundation revealed that for the ninth consecutive year, liberals dominated commencement ceremonies at America's top universities. YAF president Ron Robinson says school administrators are using commencement ceremonies "to send their students off with one more predictable leftist lecture."

Knight's comments would likely be seconded by one educator in North Carolina who gives testimony to what he describes as "the prevalence of anti-Christian sentiment" he has witnessed on his campus. In a commentary for AgapePress, Dr. Mike Adams, an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington, says the message there is clear -- evolution is true, Christianity is false, homosexuals are normal, and "people who believe [the Book of] Leviticus are sick."
