Christian Apologist Warns Believers to Use Brains, Not Just Emotions

By Fred Jackson
July 27, 2001

(AgapePress) - Modern-day evangelicals have become so focused on bare emotion and "winning the heart" that they are no longer contending intellectually for the faith in the public square. That is the conclusion of Phillip Johnson, a law professor who also travels the world teaching Christian apologetics.

Johnson says he is frustrated by many evangelicals who believe they can preserve their faith by "walling off" a Christian subculture, hoping to keep their world independent of the mainstream culture. He says the problem comes when the mainstream culture infiltrates that Christian subculture. Christians, Johnson says, are left defenseless because their immune systems have not been tested against the "infections" from the mainstream.

In very blunt terms, Johnson says there is no need for Christians to be dumb. He urges Christians to study their own doctrines and be able to speak for what they believe and why they believe it.

Johnson made his remarks during an interview with Baptist Press in Louisville, Kentucky, where he spoke at a recent conference at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
