Baptist Church Hosts Interfaith 'Attack on Fundamentalism'

(AgapePress) - A Baptist church in Houston, Texas, was the scene of a one-day conference last week aimed at attacking fundamentalism, including conservative Christianity.

More than 500 people showed up at the South Main Baptist Church in Houston for the conference titled "Fundamentalism's Threat to Democracy." According to a report in The Dallas Morning News, the meeting brought together Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scholars to discuss how conservative movements have affected each religion.

The conference was sponsored by a group called the Texas Freedom Network, which was formed to counter what it calls the "growing social and political influence of religious political extremists."

The newspaper report says that among other things, the delegates applauded calls for homosexual rights and laughed at jokes made about what they termed the "radical right."

A spokesman for the Freedom Network, Samantha Smoot, says similar conferences are planned throughout Texas in the coming months. She says the group is even preparing a Sunday school curriculum explaining its perspective about fundamentalism.
