Moral Issues: Homosexual Mentors, Homosexual 'Marriage'

By Allie Martin
August 27, 2002

(AgapePress) - A Mississippi-based pro-family group says it is time for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to stop misinforming corporate sponsors about its policies regarding homosexual mentors for children.

Recently, Big Brothers Big Sisters had faced a storm of controversy for its policy which allows homosexuals to act as mentors to children and youth. BBBSA officials have told corporate sponsors that all volunteer mentors must be approved by parents. But Randy Sharp, director of special projects for the American Family Association, says corporate sponsors are being misinformed of the organization's true policies.

"United Parcel Service [a BBBSA corporate sponsor] is saying that all parents must approve of the mentor, and that they will have full disclosure of who this individual is. That is not true," Sharp says. "Big Brothers Big Sisters own documentation says that interviews with a parent for after-school mentoring is not required -- it's very specific."

Consequently, Sharp says, parents do not know who is mentoring their child -- that they are simply signing a standard form giving their child permission to participate in the program. "The parent has no knowledge of who that individual that is being alone with their child, who is spending time with their child," he says. "They have no information whatsoever about this person."

The AFA is encouraging companies such as UPS and Verizon to reconsider their corporate sponsorships of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Hoosiers on Frontline
Meanwhile, one of AFA's state affiliates is confronting the homosexual agenda on a different front. The American Family Association of Indiana is gearing up to battle a lawsuit seeking to recognize same-sex "marriages" in that state.

The Indiana Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit on behalf of three homosexual couples who are demanding that Indiana recognize them as legally married. Micah Clark, executive director of the AFA of Indiana, has a warning for concerned Christians in other states -- be on guard against an attempt by radical homosexuals to redefine marriage.

"If you can recognize marriage as two men, why not three men?" Clark asks. "Or worse yet, why not a man and a boy? There is no logical stopping point, and same-sex 'marriage' walks society down the slippery towards polygamy and moral chaos."

Clark is adamant that no state will be exempt from the homosexual attack. He notes that steps taken by the Hoosier State did not dissuade pro-homosexual forces from making a move there.

"Indiana was one of 36 other states that passed a Defense of Marriage Act within the last five years to strengthen our laws on marriage for this purpose," he says, "and yet the gay activists and the civil libertarians came after the state anyway. This is a very serious issue for [citizens] in any state who are concerned about marriage and the traditional family."

Clark says the ICLU is out of step with the opinions of a majority of state residents. Polls show that 73% of Indiana residents oppose state endorsement of same-sex "marriage."
